Computers and First Year Chemistry

There are now many Chemistry 1 resources on-line. These do not replace lectures but aim to support your learning in chemistry. All of the University Access Centres provide free access to the Chemistry web applications via the University intranet. You may also access all the Chemistry material from a home computer if you have internet access. For technical advice about computers and about WebCT, contact the University's IT student support help desk on 9351 6000.
WebCT

All First Year Chemistry units have a resource site hosted by WebCT. To access the site click on the WebCT link when in My Uni or go to the Usydnet site (http://intranet.usyd.edu.au) click on Learn Online and you will be taken to your online learning site (if at home you may wish to bookmark this site). You will be asked for a Username and Password; these will be the Unikey (Extro account) Username and Password that you were sent with your confirmation of enrolment. Once you have entered the appropriate Username and Password you will enter the online area for all your units of study.

There is information on the unit of study structure, administration and links to all First Year Chemistry teaching resources on WebCT.

On-line Laboratory pre-work Each laboratory experiment (labelled E1, E2…. in the Laboratory Handbook) has some "pre-work" associated with it. This provides background information to the theory and practice of the experiment and has questions designed to test your understanding of the text.

You must log on and go through the pre-work and associated quiz each week before you come into the laboratory to do the practical. Not only does the pre-work give you information essential to the experiment, but you also obtain marks towards your final assessment. Note that to be credited with a mark for the pre-work you need to work through the quiz at the end of the lab pre-work text. The pre-work and quizzes may be used for revision at any time and are accessed through WebCT.

ChemCAL A series of computer aided learning modules is available on-line, designed to cover most topics in the First Year Chemistry course. Each module consists of a series of screens containing information, animations and self-help questions. The modules form no part of your assessment and no question responses are recorded. ChemCAL may be accessed via WebCT or your chemistry unit resource page and it provides a useful private study tool. If you are accessing ChemCAL from a home computer you may need to run the ChemCAL set up program to ensure the correct plug-ins are available.
Self-help Problems A series of self-help problems and fully worked solutions are available for many of the topics in the syllabus. These can be accessed via your chemistry unit resource page.
Past Exam Papers Past exam papers with very brief answers may be accessed via your chemistry unit resource page. Note that the syllabus for most chemistry units evolves and changes so that the content of past exam papers may not precisely reflect the material currently being taught. If in doubt check with your lecturer!
Lecture Notes Some lecturers may provide their own on-line resources. In these cases there will be a link to them from your chemistry unit resource page.
School of Chemistry Home Page General information about the School of Chemistry, its staff, research and teaching activities may be obtained via the home page: www.chem.usyd.edu.au
