Electronic Structure of Atoms and Ions
Early attempts to organise and classify the elements in a systematic way were based on their physical properties and chemical behaviour. We now recognise that these properties are the result of trends and differences in the electronic structure of atoms. It is the outer electrons of atoms that largely determine chemical behaviour.
