Effect of Jahn-Teller Effect on Spectrum

Use the sliders to investigate the effect of a Jahn-Teller tetragonal distortion on the splitting of t2g and eg orbitals and on the spin allowed transitions of a d1, high spin d4, high spin d6 and d9 ion. Positive splitting corresponds to a tetragonal elongation (along the z-axis) and negative splitting corresponds to a tetragonal compression (along the z-aixs) of an octahedral complex. In real complexes, the splitting of the eg orbitals is usually much bigger than that of the t2g orbitals.

Each band has been arbitarily given an intensity of 100 but the effect of band overlap can be investigated using the 'relative width' slider.

Once you have covered all of the available resources for electronic spectroscopy, you should test your knowledge and understanding with the self test.
